Album Review: The Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band- Make it Better

The Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band maybe young in years, but boy oh boy, do they have soul! Fronted by Jimmy Jax Pinchak, who is also a professional actor (check him out in Ender’s Game as Peter Wiggin), the band mixes blues and rock and draws from influences like Freddie King, The Doors, Eric Clapton, and The Black Keys. The rest of the band includes Jacob Delott on bass, Lael Eccard on drums, Nathan Leigh on keyboards, and Stan Nirenberg on guitar. Their first album together, Make it Better, was released this year and provides just the right amount of grit, heart, and irresistible melodies.

Produced by Jon Fowler, mixed by Josh Mosser (who co- wrote “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons), and mastered by Grammy- award winner, Erick Labson, this all- star band was backed by an all- star team. The overall work is superbly arranged and polished from top to bottom. It’s easy to coast through the entire album in one sitting.

What stands out the most is Jimmy Jax Pinchak’s voice. For someone so young, it’s mindblowing how mature his voice is. He has the tone and delivery of someone much older. It will be exciting to see how he continues to progress as a vocalist in the next few years.

Make It Better opens up with one of my favorite tracks on the album- “There is More.” It has a killer guitar riff in the beginning that really grabs you.  The melody in the verses is simple and memorable. The buildup to the chorus is layered nicely as well and the chorus doesn’t disappoint. Being a blues- rock band, a song wouldn’t be complete without an electrifying guitar solo, and this tune has it.

Another standout track is “Free Your Mind.” It has a classic rock vibe and demonstrates some serious slide guitar skills from Jimmy. The addition of the Pipe organ was a nice touch in the second verse.

Finally, the band’s cover of Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice” was a great addition towards the end of the album. Each band member really demonstrates their skills on their respective instruments. It would be great to see this performed live.

All in all, Make It Better is a wonderful debut album for the Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band. The musicianship is ever- present and the songs are a great starting point for what could be a very promising career in music.

You can stream the album in full on Soundcloud here.
